A fund-raiser for the Sandy Museum, in Sandy, Utah turned up something thoroughly unexpected. According to a Fox 13 report, a man brought in a book that turned out to be a 1494 copy of the Nuremberg Chronicle, a companion to the Guttenberg Bible and one of the earliest printed books in history.

Following the Antique Roadshow model, fund-raiser attendees paid $2 an item for experts to assess their value. Appraiser Ken Sanders was surprised to see the 600-year-old book among the bric-a-brac that people usually bring in with their hopes high. He told Fox News, “Outside of museums I’ve never seen one before in my life and I most assuredly didn’t expect to find this book in Sandy, Utah today.” He estimated the value at more than $100,000.

The Nuremberg Chronicles was written as a companion to the Gutenberg Bible, published forty years earlier, and contains more than 1800 amazing woodcut illustrations.

The owner of the book, who declined to be interviewed or identified, merely said it was left to him by an uncle who was a Pennsylvania Dutch attorney in Allentown, PA, and that he hope to sell it to a museum or library collection where others can see it.
