George R.R. Martin has gotten behind the campaign of a senator running for reelection.

At long last, known LiveJournal enthusiast George R.R. Martin has offered up an endorsement for a political candidate, albeit one without a giant wolf or a nickname to connote badass-ness like “the Mountain” or “Kingslayer.”

Kirsten Appleton reports for ABC News that the A Song of Ice and Fire author has thrown his support behind Senator Tom Udall, a Democrat who represents Martin’s home state of New Mexico. Last Thursday, Udall tweeted a link to a sweepstakes to win a trip to spend an evening with him and Martin, at the latter’s private theater in Santa Fe. Anybody who donates at least $5 to Udall’s reelection campaign will be automatically entered to win.

It’s not the first time Martin has been involved in his home state’s politics. This summer, he led a fundraising drive to raise money for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary (naturally) and the Food Depot in Santa Fe.

The sweepstakes winner, along with a guest, will get a free trip to Santa Fe, as well as VIP tickets to the event — which will feature a “discussion on New Mexico issues and politics in support of Sen. Udall’s reelection campaign” — and the ensuing reception and dinner with Martin and Udall.

Fans of fantasy literature and New Mexico politicians who don’t want to leave anything to chance can also buy tickets. General admission to the event is going for $250, access to the photo reception for $1,000, and a seat at the table for dinner for $2,600.

People who shell out the money for the private dinner (along with the lucky contest winners) will have the opportunity to ask the senator and the author anything they’d like. In the case of Martin’s fans — eagerly waiting for him to finish the penultimate installment of A Song of Ice and Fire — it’s likely to be something along the lines of: “What are you doing away from your computer? Get back to work!”
