Yoani Sanchez

Intrepid Cuban blogger Yaoni Sanchez posts here about the confiscation, with a little help from DHL, of her new book:

“Just yesterday, on the eve of the presentation in Chile of a compilation of my blog posts under the title Cuba Libre, I received a report from the Customs Department of the Republic. It confirmed the confiscation of ten copies of my book sent via DHL. In the rancid and brief words of the bureaucracy, it explained:

‘Physical inspection of the package found documents whose content goes against the general interests of the nation, and for this reason they have been seized consistent with the established legislation.'”

Sanchez’s writing has aroused the ire of the Cuban regime, as she is being recognized around the world for her bravery, insight and good humor in her writing about the impact of Castro’s rule over the everyday life of the Cuban people. Harassed, kidnapped and beaten for her work, Sanchez continues undaunted, writing about the conditions in Cuba. A fully up-dated version of her book will be published in English by Melville House early next year.
