FRIDAY SOMETHING-OR-OTHER-TO-DO-WITH-BOOKS MUSIC VIDEO: Belle and Sebastian

by

In a new documentary produced by Pitchfork, the members of the Scottish band Belle and Sebastian talk about the production of their classic 1996 album If You’re Feeling Sinister. The band, named after a children’s book by the French writer Cécile Aubry, has always been known for the literary quality of frontman Stuart Murdoch’s lyrics, but it wasn’t until 2004 that they made their love of books explicit.

In the delightfully low-rent video for “Wrapped Up in Books”, the band performs in Glasgow’s secondhand bookshop Caledonia Books while two young women peruse the shelves and hold up their finds for the camera. Glasses are removed and replaced, possibly meaningful looks are exchanged, and Murdoch repeats the song’s catchy refrain: “Our aspirations are wrapped up in books / Our inclinations are hidden in looks.”
