There is a new crime-fiction magazine on the scene, joining the likes of Crimespree, MysteryScene, Spinetingler, and The Strand. The perfectly named GRIFT Magazine launched last Tuesday with a killer line-up including Ray Banks, Ken Bruen, Lawrence Block, Chris F. Holm, Craig McDonald, Chris Offutt, Scott Phillips and more.

The magazine combines new fiction with nonfiction reviews of books, movies and all things crime & noir. There are some real gems to be had in this debut issue, not the least of which (at least from our standpoint) is the lead piece which has bestselling author Scott Phillips writing a stunning review about our very-own Derek Raymond’s Factory Novels (the fifth and final of which is publishing in April). Anything that opens with the anecdote that, “I can’t claim that Jim Crumley never steered me wrong …” is a clear sign of the quality to follow.

James Crumley was a drinking partner of (and one of the few capable of outlasting) Derek Raymond and both toiled brilliantly at their craft, never receiving the full-recognition they deserved. This is of course what makes a new venue like GRIFT so important.
