NYC bookstores are joining in for Independent Bookstore Day on May 2.

Early next month, indie booksellers around the country are going to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day, and Judith Rosen reports for Publishers Weekly that New York stores are planning their own dedicated version of the event.

Rosen writes that more than two dozen bookstores around the city have signed on the participate in Bookstore Day NYC on May 2, including landmarks such as the Strand Book Store, specialized stores like the Civil Service Bookshop (which supplies prep materials for the civil service exam), and Powerhouse Arena in DUMBO, which will host the after-party.

Molly Quinn, director of public programming at Housing Works, says to PW about the celebration, “New York City has always and will always be a great home for independent bookstores. We’re excited to be a part of the national effort, and thrilled to show off NYC’s best gems on this day.”

The New Yorkers are possibly taking a cue from Chicago on this; for the second year in a row, twelve booksellers in the Chicago area are working together to mark the occasion of Independent Bookstore Day. Book lovers who make it to all twelve of those stores will be able to collect pages that complete a limited edition of a previously unreleased chapbook by Stuart Dybek.

Several NYC stores are planning individual events for May 2, like a trivia contest at Astoria Bookshop in Queens, a scavenger hunt around East Harlem led by La Casa Azul Bookstore, and an appearance by author/illustrator Brian Floca at Greenlight Bookstore in Brooklyn. The after-party at Powerhouse—sponsored by Literary Hub, Tumblr, and Book Riot—kicks off at 9pm; it will be hosted by Emma Straub, Jami Attenberg, and Angela Flournoy, and feature free drinks and book giveaways from several indie booksellers.
