John Updike: We’re all failed youths ….

by

Now that all the odd hubub about John Updike has finally died down, it seems a good moment to check out this short but fascinating interview with the late author conducted by New York Times Book Review editor Sam Tannenhaus late last year. It serves to remind us that no one spoke so eloquently, precisely, and interestingly about writing as Updike did. Along the way, they discuss Philip Roth, Ernest Hemingway, Henry James, and the difference between his younger and older work.
