Johnny Temple on fostering a healthy writing community
by Melville House
Tuesday Jason Boog at Mediabistro conducted one of my favorite interviews so far in the Media Beat interview series. Boog talks to Johnny Temple from Akashic Books about what writers need to think about before trying to get a book published. Highlights from the interview include:
- Writers should be invested in their publishers as much as their publishers are in them and should be proactive about all aspect of the publishing process
- What writers need to do to get their work published (hint: it helps to have a champion on the inside of a publishing house)
- Writers should focus on their craft if they really want to rise to the top
- Writers shouldn’t write in a vacuum: find a community, be it a “virtual” or a “living breathing community”
- Isolation prohibits important serendipitous opportunities
Enjoy.
