Kick off World Book Night tonight & tomorrow

by

We’ve mentioned it here before, but don’t forget that tomorrow is the second annual World Book Night here in the US. People around the country will be giving out free books in public places, with a series of kick-off events tonight, including the previously announced one with the program’s honorary chairpersons James Patterson and Ann Patchett at Parnassus Books in Nashville, TN.

Tonight’s event in New York promises to be an exciting one—big name authors Walter Mosley, Lisa Scottoline, and Hillary Jordan will all be at the Barnes & Noble in Union Square, and according to Shelf Awareness, Patti Smith’s guitarist Lenny Kaye has written and will play a song specifically for the occasion. Over in Brooklyn, WBN festivities will focus on poetry; Alana Bell, Cheryl Boyce Taylor, and Lauren Wallach will be at WORD in Greenpoint, reading from Favorite American Poems, one of the books on this year’s list of titles to distribute.

Other events of note tonight will include Mark Twain impressionist McAvoy Layne, appearing in character at Denver’s Tattered Cover; and Percy Jackson scribe Rick Riordan and Sandra Cisneros (author of The House on Mango Street, one of two WBN books available in Spanish) at The Twig Bookstore in San Antonio, TX. Tomorrow night’s official events include three theater events, where books will be distributed at productions of plays and musicals in New York and Chicago, as well as eleven bookstores holding “Book & Rose events,” giving out a free rose with every purchase of one of this year’s WBN titles.

Check out the map below for WBN’s festivities tonight, and head to their website for full details on everything that’s going on.
