Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe is launching an effort to bring one to two readings per week to their store in Dupont Circle. Last night Megan Abbott read from her latest, The Fever, jump-starting the new author event program.

Kramer recruited longtime Politics and Prose event coordinator Sarah Baline to up their game, and in a Washington Post report, Baline tells Ron Charles, “Even if the author has read the same passage from San Francisco to Nashville, every event is a new experience with a different vibe . . . from somber and meditative to absolutely raucous.”

Our money’s on the latter. Afterwords Cafe was founded in 1976, and it has established itself as a place to meet for books, pie, and a late-night drink. Next month it’s host a beer tasting from local breweries, and it’s open twenty-four hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

Baline told Charles, “Our business is thriving, but we can’t stand still. I am scheduling author events as well as managing the store’s social media, promotion and advertising. To me, the position is really one of outreach — to our neighborhood, greater Washington and the book world at large.”
