Money moves in not so mysterious ways

Guess who?

Sarah Palin has been using her political action committee (PAC) to buy up thousands of copies of her book, “Going Rogue,” in order to mail copies of the memoir to her donors, newly filed campaign records show,” says this report by ABC News.

The former Alaska governor, beauty queen and vice-presidential candidate’s filings report that $63,000 was spent to buy “books for fundraising donor fulfillment.” According to ABC News, “The payments went to HarperCollins, her publisher, and in some instances to HSP Direct, a Virginia-based direct mail fundraising firm that serves a number of well-known conservative politicians and pundits.”

Sarah PAC also sent $20,000 to HarperCollins so that Palin could have her own photographer and an aid with her on her book tour promoting, Going Rogue: An American Life. And invested $8,000 in bookmarks, presumably to help you read the thing.

PAC’s have proved to be very efficient slush funds for political figures of all stripes. And it has yet to be ascertained if Palin is being paid royalties on those copies sold in this way. Or is HarperCollins just hoarding those greenbacks away for future patriotic efforts to help build our democracy, strengthen the flow of ideas and raise the level of public discourse?
