Mug shot of presidential historian Barry Landau released by the Baltimore police

Historian Barry Landau, author of numerous books of presidential history and a regular talking head in major mainstream media on matters of presidential protocol, and — as this website notes — someone who was named by Reader’s Digest as a “Best Collector” of presidential memorabilia, has been arrested by police in Baltimore for stealing “millions of dollars in documents from the Maryland Historical Society, including some signed by President Abraham Lincoln,” according to an Associated Press wire story.

Landau, 63, was arrested along with an accomplice, 24-year-old Jason Savedoff.

According to the AP story, “An employee told police he had been watching Savedoff and Landau for several hours, believing their behavior to be suspicious. He called police after he saw Savedoff conceal a document in a portfolio and walk it out of the library ….”

The bust uncovered a key to a locker that contained “papers signed by Lincoln worth $300,000, numerous presidential inaugural ball invitations and programs worth $500,000, a signed Statue of Liberty commemoration valued at $100,000 and a signed Washington monument commemoration valued at $100,000 ….”
