One of North Carolina’s many excellent independent bookstores—Quail Ridge Books and Music in Raleigh—announced last week that it has a new owner. Paula Seligson reports for the News and Observer that as of August, Lisa Robie Poole will take the reins at the store as the new owner.

Current owner and store founder Nancy Olson opened Quail Ridge in 1984. Now 72, she decided to sell it last November so that she can retire, something she’s looking forward to. “I’m going to read like the devil,” she told Seligson, “I will have so much more time to read, and I’m happy about that.” She’s also very satisfied with the new owner she’s found in Poole, saying that she immediately liked her demeanor, and that “she understands the mission that we have here. The basic mission is to get our children to read.”

For her part, Poole is excited to take on the challenge of running a bookstore, which has been a dream of hers for years. Her husband, Ven Poole, says she’s been talking about it since they moved to Raleigh in 1990, and that when he read in the paper that Olson was looking to sell, the opportunity was too good to pass up.

Olson says on the Quail Ridge website that she’s planning to stay on for several months to help with the transition. Poole says that she has no plans to alter the store, and will keep the current staff.
