Really, Scott Brown? Really?

by

Politicians write books. Its just a fact of life. Many of these books go on to be bestsellers (need I reference Bill Clinton, or god-forbid Sarah Palin?). But many of these people wait until they’re out of the limelight or have retired, or at least have some free time. Which brings me to Scott Brown. After only a week (yes, ONE WEEK) of being a US Senator, Senator Brown is shopping his memoir to the major publishing houses. What is this book even about? you might ask. It would be a good question, since this is Senator Brown’s first foray into the national spotlight (with the exception of his 1980s two-page naked spread in Cosmopolitan magazine).

According to a Boston Globe report, Senator Brown denies a lot of stuffy political stereotypes: “a tumultuous childhood, with both parents married three times; sternly lectured by a judge at age 12 for shoplifting LPs including a Black Sabbath record; posing nude for Cosmopolitan magazine; and riding a wave of populist anger to snatch Edward M. Kennedy’s seat from the Democrats.”

Hmmm… how unique! Our coke-abusing former president and single-parent raised current president have nothing on this Scott Brown guy. Thank god he’s busting down barriers. (One day I would like to take an informal Congressional poll on who has shoplifted small items in their past…)

Regardless, after all the work that went into the campaign that put a Republican Senator into Ted Kennedy’s seat, one would think that there would be more of a full-time focus on actually handling the job. Instead of handling the job, say, 75% of the time, and devoting all of that free time Senators have so much of to working with a collaborator to write a memoir. Gail Gitcho, Brown’s communications director, assures us that “Senator Brown will work with a collaborator so he can continue to focus fully on his service to the people of Massachusetts, which is, and always will be, his first priority.” Well, I just breathed a sigh of relief.

All I can say is, with everything going on in Congress at this moment in time (not to mention that as a Junior Senator, Brown has a lot to learn), I hope its a short book.

On the other hand, if there’s a color photo insert…
