RSC bringing Roald Dahl’s Matilda to Broadway

by

The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced plans to transport its hit musical Matilda, based on the classic Roald Dahl novel, to New York early next year. Dahl’s beloved children story centers on a precocious young girl who discovers telekinetic powers and uses them to get revenge against a tyrannical school headmistress.

Written by David Kelly and Tim Minchin, the stage adaptation of Matilda is already a smash in the UK—a reviewer for the Daily Telegraph called it “the best British musical since Billy Elliott,” and it’s picked up Best Musical awards from both the Critics’ Circle and Theatre Awards UK. The novel was previously adapted into a film in 1996, but if this trailer from the RSC is any indication, the musical comes much closer to capturing the original book’s tone and Dahl’s particular brand of slightly grotesque whimsy.
