Short stories find new home in Storyville

by

Back in November I wrote a post about Shortlist Press, a new short-story centered press in the UK using Apple’s 99-cent model for selling short stories electronically.

This week the Storyville app launched using a slightly different but resonant strategy. Designed for mobile devices (so far only the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch are compatible but other devices are soon to be added), they have elected to use a subscription model, selling a 6-month subscription for $4.99. An interesting conceit for the Storyville app is that only one new short story will show up per week. Storyville has lined up pretty impressive array of indies and large publishers contributing works, including Akashic Books, Archipelago, HarperCollins, W. W. Norton, Simon and Schuster, Random House, and Graywolf Press.

Yesterday on Galleycat, Jason Boog interviewed Paul Vidich, co-founder and publisher of Storyville. It’s a pretty interesting conversation about where the future of publishing stands now. Enjoy.
