When the Royal Canadian Mounted Police recently busted a drug ring in Calgary, Alberta, they found among the cash, weapons and drugs, an autographed copy of a book about money laundering, according to this report from the Calgary Sun.

The book, Crime School Money Laundering: True Crime Meets the World of Business and Finance was written by a former RCMP officer, Chris Mathers. It explains what exactly money laundering is, how it began (Al Capone and actual laundries) and how it is practiced today (real estate, real estate, real estate!).

“I’m glad they got caught,” Mathers told the Sun, “The book isn’t a how-to, so I’m not concerned.” According to the Sun, Mathers retired from a 20-year career with the RCMP, where he “worked undercover, posed as a gangster, a drug trafficker and a money launderer — his book is touted as a tell-all. He now provides crime and risk consulting services.”

According to his (really wild) website, Mathers is also a public speaker, specializing in such topics as “Organized crime, money laundering and other bad things” to “Fraud — making money the old-fashioned way” and “all mobbed up and no place to go.”

Two arrests were made, and one warrant issued after police seized 20 kg of marijuana, magic mushrooms, heroin, cocaine and about $70,000 in cash, along with a .22-calibre air gun, three machetes, a money counter, cellphones and ledgers. A tip-off from an anonymous source began the three-week investigation leading to the arrests.

It is not stated in the reports what, if any, other books were found. But the group gets points for research.
