If you’ve ever dreamed of running away to sea and you happen to be a librarian, this might be your big chance. SUNY Maritime College has just posted a job description for a ship’s librarian:

The Stephen B. Luce Library of SUNY Maritime College announces the position of Ship’s Librarian aboard the Training Ship Empire State VI during the 2014 Summer Sea Term. The Ship’s Librarian serves as the sole information professional and head of the library aboard the ship. The Library aboard the Empire State VI serves as the repository of information aboard the ship. It contains a collection over 3,000 titles, computer terminals with access to academic ecletronic resources.

Some of the job responsibilities include things like providing reference service and reader advisory information to students and crew, managing the circulating library, and creating port guides.

This isn’t the only opportunity out there for librarians who want to get their sea-legs. Cressida Hanson is a librarian on board a cruise ship. In an interview with Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science, she says “As the ship’s librarian, I oversee books, magazines, and board games. In the morning, I put out daily quizzes, Sudokus, and newspaper digests for guests. Based on my desk placement, I am also a de facto information station, regularly directing passengers to activities throughout the ship.”
