The End of the Tour has a trailer and Jason Segel looks silly in it

by

I am very excited about the upcoming David Foster Wallace not-quite-a-biopic The End of the Tour, a movie about a Rolling Stone writer trying to make sense of the American author. I’m not excited because I’m a big fan of David Foster Wallace—I’m not, even though I’m legally required to be as a white twenty-something living in Brooklyn and working in publishing, but sometimes you have to throw up two middle fingers and yell “fuck the law.” No, I’m excited because I think that Jason Segel looks funny in his David Foster Wallace costume. Really funny.

This is still a great picture and I still think about it and laugh at least four times a week. If I could publish this picture as a book, I would. It tells like sixty thousand words.

Anyway, the trailer for The End of the Tour dropped this week and it’s about what you’d expect. It’s told through the lens of Wallace’s suicide; Jesse Eisenberg cements his title as King of Vocal Fry; Segel wears a big ass bandana and looks uncomfortable. As Jeet Heer points out over at The New Republic, this seems like another Rolling Stone movieAlmost Famous without Kate Hudson around—rather than a movie about Wallace himself or, for that matter, his art (or, for that matter any art, really). Segel seems to play Wallace as a kind of depressive pixie dream boy—a lightly tortured but disarming genius who exists so Jesse Eisenberg can self-actualize. Of course, trailers aren’t movies and judging them like they are is silly—and I should say that I’m far more likely to actually see this movie now that I’ve seen the trailer.

We will continue posting pictures of Jason Segal in his David Foster Wallace costume whenever it is slightly relevant to do so. Pictures like this:
