Over the weekend, Peter Jackson unveiled the first trailer to the highly anticipated final installment of his Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 2 The Battle of The Five Armies. Sure, the fact that Tolkien‘s short, charming book was turned into a trilogy of long, long movies remains galling and exploitative. And sure, the first movie was pretty terrible and basically consisted of one long chase sequence (though fat chin Goblin King was a delight). But the second installment, The Desolation of Smaug, was fun (I saw it twice!) and had a great title and Bombur got stuck in a barrel, which was hilarious. So basically, we’re even, Peter Jackson. Don’t mess this up.

Judging by this short trailer, Peter Jackson is reprising the somber tone of The Twin Towers, the second best film in his Lord of the Rings trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring was, by far, the best of the three) and amping up the nostalgia: as Kotaku notes, the trailer features a song sung by Pippin in one of the most emotionally stirring scenes in The Return of the King, an otherwise listless movie. And Legolas is still super hot, which is a relief.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will be released in December and will make 40 billion dollars, even if it’s completely terrible.
