WORD Bookstore opening a Jersey City location

by

Independent bookstore WORD has been a fixture in Greenpoint neighborhood for almost six years now, a bastion of literary culture in Brooklyn’s northernmost neighborhood. Now it looks like they’re setting their sights on a new location; a post on WORD’s Tumblr last week was captioned, “New year. New WORD. Coming to Jersey City. 2013.”

The announcement of the second location is tantalizingly short on details. The Tumblr post features a photo of a set of doors and windows covered with brown paper. The store announced on Twitter that the spot is near the PATH train’s Grove Street station on Newark Avenue, putting it at about fifteen minutes from the 14th Street stop, and just seven minutes from the World Trade Center.

The Jersey Journal says that a new indie bookstore will be a welcome presence in Jersey City, which doesn’t have many options for the avid reader. Reporter Terrence T. McDonald points out that “it would be one of only a handful of locations to buy new books in Hudson County, which saw the Barnes and Noble in Hoboken shutter in 2010. Since then, Tachair has opened on Newark Avenue, while Symposia in Hoboken continues to sell used books.”

WORD celebrated its fifth anniversary in Greenpoint last March; the new location in Jersey City will open sometime later this year.
