Amazon increases spending on lobbying against having to obey tax laws

Amazon.com spent $540,000 in the first quarter of the year “to lobby the federal government on online sales taxes and several other issues, according to a disclosure report,” reports an Associated Press wire story. The amount is considerably more — 46% more — than the same quarter last year.

According to the AP report, most of the money was spent in opposition to legislative campaigns underway in several states to require online retailers to collect sales taxes. (As MobyLives has reported before, Amazon has reacted equally aggressively in other ways, too.)

Amazon also lobbied the Federal government on net neutrality, “And it lobbied on digital product competition issues, as well legislation related to organized retail crime ….
