Tom McCarthy a Booker Shoo-in?

We recently reported on the betting odds for the Nobel and Man Booker literary prizes. It turns out the Nobel jury once again thwarted American authors and gambler’s expectation by awarding Mario Vargas Llosa the prize, beating out such favorites as Cormac McCarthy and Tomas Tranströmer. Meanwhile in the Man Booker contest, The Guardian reports that a sudden £15,000 bet on Tom McCarthy‘s C drove British gambling site Ladbrokes to suspend betting on the literary prize. Is the fix in? Have the judges leaked their votes? Or is some literary critic merely betting his heart against “sentimental realism“?
