Famous writers and their typewriters
by Melville House
If you’ve been to any of the various outdoor flea markets or craft fairs in New York recently, you’ve noticed a trend that’s a bit anachronistic: big booths with vendors selling typewriters. And not just clunkers: most of these typewriters are fully restored, polished, and sleek versions of their former selves. And they appear to have been cared for in ways they probably never were in their natural lives.
I think this nostalgia must be pretty strong across the Atlantic as well because the Guardian just published a wonderful slide show of famous writers with their typewriters. A small sampling:
Tennessee Williams
Helen Gurley Brown
William Faulkner
Patricia Highsmith
