Inflatable dolls for intellectuals

by

However happy you may be with your flesh and blood partner, any obsessive reader has to admit to the odd romantic fantasy about some character in a favourite book. I’ve always thought that ultimate happiness would be achieved with P.G. Wodehouse’s Psmith; other friends confess undying devotion to Heathcliff or Galadriel. If the impossibility of your love has ever depressed you, take heart: according to a story from the Daily Telegraph by Danielle Demetriou, Japanese manga fanatic Taichi Takahashi has launched an online petition to make marriage to a fictional character legal in Japan. “I am no longer interested in three dimensions,” he says. “I would even like to become a resident of the two-dimensional world.” He’s hoping to gather 1 million signatures. I toyed with the idea — but then, reading this piece by Alison Flood on one of the Guardian blogs, I realised that I was not alone in idolising Psmith. What would that mean for our union — do bigamy laws apply?
