iPad expected to vastly outsell Kindle

by

The imminent release of the Apple iPad (on April 3rd) is leading to more and more stories about it — such as this New York Post report that says “Apple’s manufacturing partners now expect to ship 2.5 million iPads between March-May, considerably ahead of her previous estimate of 750,000 for the June quarter. What’s more, they’re now forecasting shipments of 8-10 million iPads in calendar 2010, considerably more than prior expectations of 5+ million.” Out of those shipping numbers, a Morgan Stanley analyst tells the paper she expects sales of over 6 million units.

In comparison, Amazon has never revealed how many Kindles it has sold or expects to sell — CEO Jeff Bezos has claimed, simply, “Millions,” which many reports, such as this one from Paid Content, dispute. But there is general agreement that Apple’s sales will dwarf Kindles this year. This story from Mac Daily News says “Apple will sell upwards of 20 million iPhone and iPod touch devices in the holiday quarter alone; 40 times the Kindle sales estimated by analysts. 40 times.”

Meanwhile, this report from Ipadmodo says the next iTunes update will be on the day of the iPad release, and in it, “Audiobooks, will be replaced instead with a Books section, which will display all compatible book content for connected devices.”
