Literacy down, sugar levels up!

by

In this report on Wired.com, proud dad Ken Denmeade shows off his 11 year-old son’s book report on The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien — a cake made to resemble Bilbo‘s Hobbit hole, Bag End.

Apparently Denmeade junior is a fan of Duff Goldman‘s reality food show, The Ace of Cakes, or maybe he’s just a fan of cake, or maybe he’s a fan of not writing a book report — regardless, the cake shows an innovative sense of materials. Particularly fetching is the grass made of crushed Rice Krispies stuck on with a layer of frosting. “A+” on conception and execution, though little is revealed about young Demeade’s reading and writing skills….

Valerie Merians is the co-founder and co-publisher of Melville House.
