“Amphetamine-taking abusive types, who drive at speed and cause a lot of road accidents and kill animals,” will be writing poetry now, reports the New Zealand Herald. The Sydney, Australia poetry group called The Red Room Company is looking for a few long distance truck drivers to participate in their Dust Poems collaborative poetry project. Red Roomm says its seeking “the sensitive hearts beneath those tattooed chests and stained blue singlets, hoping to find three truck drivers to write about life on Australia’s roads, in collaboration with three mainstream poets.” Johanna Featherstone, Red Room artistic director, says, “the notions of solitude and loneliness and infinity and dust are very popular themes in poetry, and truck drivers know all about that.” The truckers must agree—so far, ten have signed on.
