The book biz in Bulgaria

by

As part of a continuing series, Book Brunch is publishing Global Publishing Information reports from the Publishers Association. In the most recent posting, Paul Richardson gives a breakdown of the publishing scene in: Bulgaria.

“Before 1990 publishing was in the hands of a couple of dozen state monopolies that were ideologically directed by the government. Today there are up to 3,000 registered commercial publishers, but fewer than 100 carry out significant business and perhaps a dozen dominate the market. … After the fall of Communism there was a surge in demand for both banned Bulgarian authors and whatever foreign authors could be brought rapidly to the market. As a result some rather unlikely Western writers became huge bestsellers.”
