The trend toward stop-motion animation in book trailers

by

Is it just me or does it seem like there’s a strong appetite for book trailers that involve stop-motion animation? There were some notable videos last year that went viral thanks to the novelty of being able to watch the design process in action. For instance, last March everyone was talking about this book trailer that was a stop-motion animation of the cover design process for Gail Carriger‘s steampunk vampire novel Blameless:

And last fall, one of my personal favorites was this book trailer for Steven Johnson‘s Where Good Ideas Come From, which contained a video of a cartoonist drawing what’s described in the voice-over narration by the author:

Last week on The Casual Optimist there was the following video of Will Bryant drawing the cover for the new issue of the magazine Signature. Maybe it’s because I’m virtually incapable of creating aesthetically pleasing visual art, but like a lot of people I can’t get enough of these things. To me it’s a bit like having a great magic trick explained–even though you’ve been shown the mechanics of a trick, you continue to be fascinated by it and amazed that you’re still fooled by the illusion. Enjoy.
