Vive les Montréalais

by

Hans Fallada’s Every Man Dies Alone has been celebrated by many famous publications and people, but in some ways this ecstatic blog post from 200 square-foot Argo Books in Montreal best captures the joy of discovering Fallada for the first time:

HANS FALLADA. HANS FREAKING FALLADA. That is me yelling his name from the literary rooftops. Where has this guy been all my life? Have you ever wondered what Dostoevsky would have written about the Third Reich? Well now I think we know….[Fallada] He demands you understand the position people were put in under the Nazis and further demands that we do not for a second forgive them for saving their own skins.

The web is wonderful in many ways, but it might be at its most wonderful when it introduces you to a kindred spirit. Thanks for reading, Argo!
