Yesterday was the birthday of the bard of Scotland, Robert Burns, and as you raise your glass to him tonight, How’s Your Drink? author Eric Felton suggests two things to remember in a Wall Street Journal column: One, never call him “Bobby” Burns or, if you’re a Brit, “Rabbie.” Second, make that cocktail you’re toasting him with a, er, Bobbie Burns. Felton provides helpful tips as to how to maintain number one (by memorizing Ogden Nash‘s 1951 poem “Everything’s Haggis in Hoboken,” which notes “I have an inexpensive hobby / Simply not to call him Bobby”) and the best way to concoct number two (use a good Scotch, as in the recipes he provides). And if you’re wondering what to eat whilst imbibing: Garrison Keillor, in a posting on The Writer’s Alamanac, details how to present the haggis.
