SLIDESHOW: The Brooklyn Book Festival
by Claire Kelley
It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Brooklyn Book Festival on Sunday! We asked some of the visitors to the Melville House booth to answer two questions:
1) What is your favorite Melville House book?
2) What do you like most about the Brooklyn Book Fair?
Click through the slideshow to see the answers.
“My favorite Melville House book is Michael Kolhaas for his narrative, which from start to finish moves better than any short novel I’ve read.” —Doug Mann, transcendentalist
“I’m excited to read Lady Susan because Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors and I’ve never read this one. I’m also interested in it because the main character is not a nice person and it’s in epistolary form. What I like about the Brooklyn Book Fair is that the community of readers you might meet online are here and you can meet them and talk to them in person.” —Sonia Sariya, writer
“I like the Melville House shirt slogan because it sounds funny. My favorite part about the Brooklyn Book Fair is that I can be surrounded by books and I can have fun.”—James, who describes himself as fun, athletic, and adventurous.
“I just bought Futility by William Gerhardie because it was described as a ‘forgotten masterpiece.’ According to the blurb on the cover, Evelyn Waugh called Gerhardie a ‘genius.’ And Edith Wharton wrote the preface.” —Madeline Fentress, Editor of the Hudson Review
“My favorite Melville House book is Death and the Penguin because I like European mysteries and that one is an unexpected delight. I like the diversity of booths and writers at the Brooklyn Book Fair.” —David Ashby
“My favorite Melville House book is The President by Georges Simenon. I was amazed that it’s so different from everything else he’s written. It’s a really great book about the thoughtful use of power.” —Eric Stern, a big reader
